I get fed up of hearing young people talk of wanting to be shown respect, doesnt being shown respect follow respecting other people.

And when i was young we were always being told to respect our elders they have lived longer and seen more and were the ones who we were expected to look up to. You earn respect whatever age you are, it is not some thing you get for nothing.

Also it gets me when people say they have little to do with there parants because they dont like them for some reason. I want to know what it as to do with the fact they are still your parants the ones who brought you up and for that alone they deserve a degree of respect and deserve you to keep in touch.

Seems today unless young people want money they rarely care if there parants are dead or alive, what happened to the going to visit mum and dad because they are mum and dad and they are there, not for any other reason.

i dont get on with my mum and my mum and dad didnt raise me but i still love and respect them

We were taught to respect the position if not the person in that position, ie, teachers, ministers, policemen, doctors etc, even if we did not respect them.

  Well yes thats right as you say even if they might be a rubbish teacher we hated but we still showed respect because of who they were as we did with those others you mention.xx

  I hated my step mother she put me down all the time and said horrible things to me, my dad i hardly ever saw but i still respected them for the mere fact they were my parants and i continued to visit them up until the day they died.

I agree with everything you have said but, and this is from a 20-something person, sometimes older people can be just as bad! I won't go into specifics but there is one elderly couple in particular who use public transport and they have no manners what so ever nor do they respect anyone they deal with and then complain that no one shows them any respect!

It's definately a two way street and I don't think some people realise that.

  I agree there are some very unpleasant old people who demand from the younger generation respect they dont deserve and are very rude people. Infact some young people could teach them some manners.

I agree to get respect you have to give it too. However that said I just dont get on with my dad as he has never respected me he runs me down every chance he gets

  You too, i had a step mother like that i cant really blame any one for staying away, perhaps my insecurity made me go back, the longing for a family i had never had perhaps.
  
  I guess i felt they were the only stable thing in my life all i had known of any sort of family and i felt it was my duty to be there for them.

Its a two way thing I am afraid. Over here we have a large number of elderly overners who think that because they have moved here and graced us with their presence they can be as rude as they want to anyone. Respect has to be earned on a personal level and if someone will not respect me as an equal then they will get nothing out of me. And I'm sorry but I think that attitude should be the norm.

  I myself have come across some very rude old people so i know what your saying i have been treated like shit by some of them and i much prefer the company of young people.
  
  But not all old people are the same and it seems that some of the nicer ones are treated the worse.xx

hmmm...difficult this, avenscent...not my choice but my parents and I didn't have any contact for many years, and I only contacted my Mum towards the end of her life by phone because my bro kept saying she kept asking where I was, so I phoned and said my bro said you wanted to talk to me and she said..'No, she didn't'...LOL...but we did from time to time but I never saw her again...her choice...I can't say I had much respect for either of my parents, because they had a seriously bad effect on all three of their children...as they're both dead now...I've let go of all the harm and hurt they caused but I do get a bit peeved when I hear people saying that you should stay in touch with your parents...there's quite a few of us around whose parents didn't care whether they ever saw us again, so doesn't always work out the way some people think it should...and elders also have to earn respect...young ones should respect those who have earned it, but I don't see them having any obligation to respect those who haven't...would you? GBHs...XXX

  Its difficult i know and i sympathise. I suppose the people who reared me had nobody else, and i had nobody else, they were all the family i had ever known, so i felt i should be there for them.xx

Respect has to be earned... I've always believed this. Respect cannot be demanded.

My parents didn't want me so I was brought up by my aunt and uncle. My aunt threw me out of the house one evening after a row, 4 days after my 17th birthday. I had absolutely nowhere to go, and hardly any money! I cannot find it in me to respect people like that ever!!

I forgave my mum, after many years of wandering overseas.
It was the best thing I ever did.
Now I have all the ancient photographs of my family.
I know all the names of my ancestors, and where they came from.
Most of all, I got to know my real mum, as a woman and a friend.
Sadly, she died in 2006, but not before she said, "If only I could see your dear face just once again."
I couldn't go to England and be there, for I was suffering an eight-montoh bout of pericarditis, (inflammation of the bag around the heart."
Mum would have been 91 this past August. God Bless her.

  That is so sad jolly it really is. I never got on with my foster mum she was cruel but much later in life towards the end of her life she began to understand me better and i her, and a bonding took place that had never happened before, pity it was too late.xx

    I have often felt that there are certain women who should never become mothers.
    I also know a few women who have had children, (my sister-in-law, e.g., had eight!) and they all came out happy, healthy and good-looking.

im 23 and i work on the principle 'treat others as you wish to be treated'.
I know some people who say they dont respect others until they earn it but i respect everybody until they do something to lose my respect. trust has to be earned.
